Premium Marketplace Item
A scarce Sonny Liston signed fight contract.
This is an exhibition fight contract between the promoters of an exhibition fight that Sonny participated in that took place in Anchorage, Alaska, and the big bear, Sonny Liston.
It mentions Liston fighting for the sum of $5,500 in advance, $11,000 total. Liston fight contracts (exhibition or otherwise) are seldom seen and few and far between.
Liston took almost a year off after losing his second fight with Muhammad Ali. (Phantom punch fight.) This was his first fight of any kind on his comeback trail. He gave an exhibition in Anchorage, Alaska on April 2, 1966 against three opponents, George Gaston, (who substituted for Herb Johnnie), Brady Jackson, and Fred Waldron. Each man went two exhibition rounds with Liston.
Here is a chronology of Liston's fights. This fight is listed under 1966.
Sonny Liston record at Cyberboxingzone.com.
It is signed by Liston as well as the two co-promoters, Frank Skinner and Paul Coulton, and all the signatures were witnessed by Alaska public notary Charles H. Knuth.
This contract is signed "Charles Sonny Liston", a rare form of his signature. Most Liston signatures are signed Sonny Liston, and some official documents were signed Charles Liston, a full signature of Charles Sonny Liston is a scarcity.
There is a small tear in the bottom right of the contract that does not touch any writing.
Nice piece of boxing history and witnessed by a notary with raised notary seal of the State of Alaska.
