BARNEY ROSS (1909-1967)
Born Dec. 23rd, 1909 as Beryl David Rosofsky. Ross grew up in Chicago raised by Jewish Orthodox parents who wanted him to become a Hebrew teacher. The family was opposed to fighting of any kind, however after his father was killed in a holdup, Barney became the breadwinner in the family and he convinced his mother he could make money in the prizering. Thus began the career of one of the greatest Welterweights ever.
At the age of 23 he won both the Lightweight and Junior Welterweight World titles by defeating Tony Canzoneri in 1933. Ross then had a memorable 3 fight series with Jimmy McLarnin in which he won the Welterweight title, lost the title, and then won it back again with each fight going the decision route and all taking place in the span of a year.
Barney held the title until 1938 when he fought the very last fight of his career against the great Henry Armstrong who was in the prime of his career. Armstrong battered Ross so severely the crowd was shouting to the referee to stop the fight. However Barney never went down and the fight ended in a decision in Armstrongs favor.
Barney Ross was never "Knocked Out" in his career.
After retiring Barney enlisted in the Marines during World War II and was decorated for Bravery after he was wounded at Guadacanal. Barney wrote an autobiography about his experiences which was later turned into a motion picture titled "Monkey on My Back".
In 1967 Barney Ross passed away after a long bout with Cancer.
This is a huge c. 1950's colorized photo of Barney Ross posed with his friend Benny Benjamin. The photo is mounted on thick fiberboard with a wood frame backing and a mount on the back for wall hanging.
The inscription is very bold and large and is done in Beautiful thick marker or paint marker. I can't imagine there being a better Barney Ross signature in existence.
